What makes a Not-for-profit hospice different from a For-profit hospice?

In our community, there are over 250 hospices. All these hospices are for-profit except 1 not-for-profit. Most hospices are concerned about their bottom line. They worry more about the cost of caring for a patient rather than the care they are providing. The quality of care and types of care provided by a for-profit hospice differ from a not-for-profit hospice provider. It is important to ask about how many nurse visits your loved one will receive. Research has shown that a not-for-profit hospice will spend 10% more on nursing visits and 35% more on social worker visits. It is important to ask who is a part of your loved ones’ care team. How many times will they see a nurse? What other services does the hospice offer beyond those required?
